Fever, also known as pyrexia is an increase in body temperature or high body temperature. The normal body temperature is 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit (37 degrees Celsius.) Any temperature higher than that is considered as fever. However, medical professionals consider body temperature that is above 100.4 F (38 C) as medically significant.

One of the body’s natural defenses to fight infection is fever. This is why low-grade fevers without troubling symptoms and signs normally go away on their own. When foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses invade the body, the immune system responds to it, often resulting in a fever. These foreign invaders signal the hypothalamus in the brain to increase the body temperature set point in order to help the body fight off the infection.

Fever is also a common symptom of infections like colds, influenza and stomach flu. Other infections that may cause fever are those of the ear, throat, lung, bladder, and kidney. In children, vaccine shots or teething may result in a low-grade fever.

A person with a fever may feel very uncomfortable. Common signs and symptoms of fever are

1. Temperature greater than  100.4 F(38 C) in adults and children
2. Headache
3. Body aches
4. Chills
5. Weakness
6. Fussiness in children
7. Feeling lightheaded
8. Loss of appetite

Treatment for a fever

A low-grade fever that does not cause discomfort does not need to be treated unless instructed by the doctor to do so. Over-the-counter fever-reducing medications that doctors can prescribe to be taken at home are Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen, and Naproxen. However, OTCs may have side effects that can actually do more harm to the body than good. Aside from medications, there are some home remedies for a fever.

1. If you have a fever, wear comfortable clothes and avoid overdressing. If you are overdressed, your temperature may further rise.

2. Keep your body hydrated by drinking plenty of water and fluids. Avoid alcohol and caffeinated alcohol that can contribute to dehydration.

3. Stay in a properly ventilated room.

Peppermint essential oil can be used to help cool the skin and body when you have a fever. It contains menthol, a natural chemical that gives peppermint its flavor and cold feeling when you smell and touch it. Menthol works to cool the body when applied to the skin. Peppermint essential oil also has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties that can relieve pain associated with fever such as headaches and body aches.

DIRECTIONS:

1. In a small container, mix a few drops of peppermint essential oil with a teaspoon of jojoba oil.

2. Apply the oil blend directly to a cold compress.

3. Lay the cold compress over your forehead, close your eyes, and inhale deeply.

It is best to always seek medical attention for any kind of fever that is accompanied by other signs and symptoms.
