How to Use Lavender Essential Oil for Menstrual Cramps

Do you suffer from menstrual cramps whenever you have your period?

               What are menstrual cramps? Women are very familiar with menstrual cramps. The technical term for menstrual cramps is dysmenorrhea. It comes from a Greek expression that has a literal meaning, “difficult monthly flow.” Menstrual cramps are pains that are felt in the lower belly. Many women think it only happens during the monthly period. However, menstrual cramps can actually happen a few days before, during, or after your period. 

               Menstrual cramps can be felt in different ways. It can be a crampy or sharp pain. It may reach from the lower belly to the lower back and down the back of the legs. The pain may come and go. It can be dull or constant pain. Menstrual cramps can be accompanied by headaches, sick feeling in the stomach, diarrhea or constipation. Women can have different feelings and types of menstrual cramps. 

               There are two types of dysmenorrhea. Primary dysmenorrhea may be caused by high levels of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are chemicals in the body that make the uterus contract and make the nerve endings more pain-sensitive. Secondary dysmenorrhea is often caused by health problems that affect the reproductive system.


               Some remedies can alleviate primary menstrual cramps. On the other hand, secondary menstrual cramps should be attended to by a doctor or by a medical specialist. 

1. Having enough sleep so that the body will be rested. 

2. Exercising regularly can help promote balanced hormones.

3. Applying a warm compress on the lower belly can give relief.

4. Taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can be helpful to relieve pain.

               NSAIDs have side effects on the body so most prefer the natural option. Lavender essential oil is an effective soothing and calming essential oil. It has anti-inflammatory properties that can help relieve pain. What’s more, Lavender essential oil is known for its relaxing and soothing scent that can truly help when you are having menstrual cramps.


1. Dilute 2 drops of lavender essential oil in 1 ounce of carrier oil like sunflower oil.

2. Apply and rub the oil blend onto your abdomen.

3. You can also apply a warm compress to your abdomen for relief.
