Are you prone to motion sickness?

Some people suffer from motion sickness when traveling by car, train, airplanes, and boats. Anyone can suffer from motion sickness but it is more common among women and children. Also called seasickness, motion sickness is a sick feeling triggered by movement. It is a common disturbance of the inner ear, the area that affects our sense of balance and equilibrium. Motion sickness is caused by repeated motion from a vehicle or any other movements that disturb the inner ear.

Motion sickness occurs when the brain receives conflicting messages about motion and the body’s position in space. The conflicting message comes from the inner ear, what the eyes see, what the skin receptors feel and from the muscles and joints sensors. For example, when you are traveling by car and you are seated at the back, your inner ears and skin receptors sense a forward movement but your eyes can only see the only a static view which is the back of the front seat. Another example is when you are on a plane and you cannot see the turbulence tossing the plane from side to side. The confusion in senses results in motion sickness that manifests in several symptoms.

The common symptom of motion sickness is an upset stomach. Other symptoms are cold sweat and dizziness. A person suffering from motion sickness may complain of a headache and may look pale. It’s also common to experience nausea, vomiting, and trouble maintaining balance.

The following preventive measures may help if you’re prone to motion sickness.

1. When on board a ship, go up on the deck and focus on the horizon.

2. In an airplane, book a window seat and look out the window. A seat over the front edge of the wing is the most preferable spot because the degree of motion is the lowest in this area. Adjust the air vent to blow cool air on your face.

3. On a train, always face forward and sit near a window.

4. In a vehicle, sit in the front seat or near the window. If you are the passenger, look at the scenery in the distance.

5. Do not read in a moving vehicle. Reading is not only bad for the eyes but can also trigger or worsen

6. Get enough rest before traveling. You will be more susceptible to motion sickness if you are tired.

7. Do not easy greasy or acidic food before traveling. Foods like coffee, orange juice, bacon, sausages, pancakes, and other similar food are slow to digest. Do not eat too much but do not skip eating as well.

8. Avoid others who have become nauseous with motion sickness. Seeing and smelling others who have motion sickness may cause you to feel the same way.

9. When nausea begins, eat a few plain dry crackers to help settle a queasy stomach.

10. It can be helpful to keep the eyes closed or take a nap to resolve the conflict between the eyes and the inner ear.

Fortunately, essential oils can be used to alleviate motion sickness. Essential oils are powerful natural remedies that can help ease nausea caused by motion sickness. They contain properties that can help also help improve digestion and soothe dizziness.

Peppermint essential oil has been used since ancient times to fight nausea. It has a cool and minty aroma that can soothe an upset stomach. The healing properties of peppermint essential oil can relax the gastric muscles to keep them from cramping or over-contracting. Some studies show that your symptoms of nausea will improve and you will feel better quickly after inhaling peppermint essential oil.

Lavender essential oil is known for its relaxing effects. This oil can also be used to reduce symptoms of nausea. Lavender essential oil relaxes and puts the body at ease while traveling.

It is easy to make roller bottle blends and you can take them with you anywhere you go.
