How to Make Homemade Frankincense Body Butter

Things you will need:

- Hand mixer or stand mixer
Mixing bowl
8oz amber glass jar
¾ cup shea butter
¼ cup of coconut oil (solid)
1 teaspoon Vitamin E oil
10 drops Frankincense Essential Oil


Dry skin feels and looks rough. It isn’t usually serious but if not cared for, dry skin can lead to discomfort, skin diseases, and infection. Dry skin is commonly caused by the weather, low moisture in the air and soaking in the water for a long time. Harsh soaps and detergents can also strip moisture from the skin. Psoriasis, eczema and other skin conditions can also cause dry skin.

Using lotions to moisturize the skin is a good way to keep the skin from getting excessively dry, especially in the winter. However, at times, lotion is not enough, especially for extremely dry parts of the skin like elbows and knees. Body butter is more effective in hydrating excessively dry skin. 

               Body butter is a skin moisturizer that contains cocoa butter, shea butter, coconut oil, and another vegetable-based oil. It is different from regular lotion because it is thicker and is more effective at rejuvenating dry skin. Body butter can be used all over the body, especially on problem areas such as elbows and knees. 

               The best time to apply body butter is just after taking a shower. After stepping out of the shower or tub, pat your body dry. Avoid completely rubbing yourself dry so that a little moisture is left on your skin. Apply a small lump of body butter directly on your skin. Don’t use too much. If you do, your skin could get greasy. Rub the body butter gently, using firm, broad strokes until your skin fully absorbs it. 

               Concentrate on your feet, hands, elbows, knees and other parts of the body that tend to be particularly dry or calloused. For the best results, you can apply a second layer of body butter on these problem areas. To help soften the skin on your hands and feet, apply body butter before bedtime then cover up with cotton socks or gloves. 

               Body butter should be part of your skincare routine, especially during the winter. You can whip up an all-natural body butter at home. The ingredients are easy to find online or at a local health food store. The best thing about a homemade body butter is that you can use essential oils. Let’s learn a bit more about the ingredients we need. 

Shea butter - It is a kind of fat extracted from the nut of an African tree, popularly used in beauty remedies and skin protection for centuries. Shea butter effectively holds in moisture and keeps it in place even when the weather is cold. 
    Coconut oil - It comes from the meat of the coconut palm. Cold-pressed coconut oil is used in the kitchen. It is also a great moisturizer for the skin and hair. 
      Vitamin E oil - It has antioxidant properties that help reduce the signs of aging. Vitamin E oil can enhance the skin-softening properties of skincare products. 
        Frankincense essential oil - It is popular for its many health and skincare benefits. Frankincense promotes healthy cell generation and reduces the appearance of wrinkles, age spots, scars, and stretch marks. It helps the skin become smooth and healthy. The scent of Frankincense also provides a soothing and comforting effect, thus boosting the health benefits of body butter. 

                         Before making the body butter, make sure that the shea butter and coconut oil are in solid form before blending them. They may need to be refrigerated for about 30 minutes before blending if they have been stored at a warm temperature. 

          Simple steps in making Frankincense Body Butter:

          1. In a mixing bowl, combine the shea butter, coconut oil, and Vitamin E oil

          2. Blend the mixture using a stand mixer or hand mixer.

          3. Scrape the sides and then whip the ingredients until they double in volume. 

          4. Add in the Frankincense essential oil and whip for another 10 seconds.

          5. Transfer into the jar.

                         To keep your skin luxuriously smooth, apply a little to your skin. Remember that a little goes a long way. Keep the jar away from sunlight to help protect the essential oil. You can store this body butter for 12 to 24 months.
